First Time Campers
The Start of a Lifelong Journey.
At Camp Santa Maria, we’re specifically invested in the success of first-time campers. Our mission is to ensure that every new camper feels seen, known, and supported. Whether it’s outreach from our Camp Director, or meeting counselors and cabinmates, campers are welcomed into a culture of radical inclusion.
Opening Day
From the moment you arrive at camp, our staff is dedicated to making the transition seamless. We don’t just “check you in”; we welcome you into the Camp Santa Maria family.
Intentional Inclusion
We purposefully group first-time campers with experienced, empathetic counselors who are experts in “homesickness-to-happiness” transitions. Anxiety and homesickness are a normal part of going to camp for the first time, and our staff are trained to help guide campers through those feelings to come out feeling stronger.
A Symbol of Peace
For many of our campers, both new and old, the statue standing above camp, Christ of the Rockies, serves as a comforting “North Star” on the horizon—a constant reminder that they are in a place of safety, grace, and belonging.
Manageable Challenges
Whether it’s their first time away from home or their first time on a climbing wall, we provide “level-appropriate” adventures that guarantee a win and support through challenges.
The “Big Brother/Big Sister” Spirit
Our returning campers are trained to be ambassadors. They remember their first day, and they take pride in showing new campers the “Santa Maria Way.”
Positive Reinforcement
We celebrate the small victories—making a bed, trying a new food at the Dining Hall, or leading a cabin cheer.
Transparent Communication
We provide regular updates so you can see the growth and joy happening in real-time.
Safety First
We invest in top-tier medical staff and counselor training and maintain a high staff-to-camper ratio to ensure no child ever feels lost in the crowd.
A Mission You Can Trust
Because our operating model is built on a charitable purpose, our singular focus is the well-being and character development of your child.
